OUR STORY

DURBANVILLE WINE VALLEY

OUR HISTORY

Bloemendal Wine Estate is a historic gem, situated in the fertile Durbanville Valley, just 30 minutes from Cape Town. The farm was established in 1702 and is one of the largest wine farms in the region, reaching up along the Kanonberg Mountains. It was established to provide fresh produce to Cape Town and the Dutch East Indian Company ships travelling on the spice route to and from India. Kanonberg, translated to ‘canon mountain’ was the site where canons were fired to signal to Cape Town that fresh produce were ready to collect. This hilltop has amazing views of Table Bay, False Bay and Table Mountain.

An historic gem, situated in the fertile Durbanville Valley, the farm was established in 1702 and is one of the largest wine farms in the region.

THE EVOLUTION OF OUR WINE

The first wine cellar was built in 1920 by Jannie van der Westhuizen and Bloemendal was registered as an Estate in 1987. Vineyard plantings on the estate are mainly French cultivars with the focus on Sauvignon Blanc. An iconic wine was created by Bloemendal in the Suider-Terras Sauvignon Blanc (Southern Slope) gaining world-wide recognition for its superior quality since the first bottling in 1987. Many winemakers have commented that this site is one of the best for Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa. Wines are made in our small boutique cellar using old and new world methods to produce wines that reflect our terroir. In 2008 a private company bought the Estate with the focus to establish the estate as a sought after producer amongst world wines.
